Happy Birthday Chanel!

To celebrate today being the birthday of Coco Chanel
Desdemona’s got a Chanel-shaped treat for you.

Our original ’82 Rolling Stones tour t-shirt sold within 5 mins of being listed, but hopefully a few more of you will get a chance at these…. before I show you, I thought maybe you’d like to hear a bit about the creator of the Chanel fashion house, Coco herself….

Born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel on the 19th August 1883.

She is known as one of the most influential fashion designers of all time

She was raised in an orphanage, where she was taught to sew, Chanel begun her career in fashion as a milliner,

she then went on to create beautiful, less restricting clothing for women during the first world war, the first “Sporty-Chic” if you will.

Her clothing became popular because of the attention to detail in her garments for example the ‘cardigan suit’ where the hem of the cardigan was weighted with chain so it would hang straight, So although I say Sporty-Chic, it was definitely more Posh Spice than Sporty Spice.

Then in 1927 Chanel launched possibly her most notorious item, her Chanel No.5 fragrance, 5 being her lucky number, and has become one of the most iconic scents ever.
Chanel gave out free bottles of Chanel No.5 to the American G.I. troops to take back home to their wives,
and got the ultimate celebrity endorsement when Marilyn Monroe was asked what she wore in bed and she replied with ” Chanel No.5, of course”

Chanels’ style is often depicted as a lot of black and white, it was Chanel who introduced black as a “fashion colour”. Before Chanel, to dress in all black was only for mourning.
Chanel designed her infamous black jersey dress (jersey was a fabric that was previously used for mens underwear) and she would often dress in all black herself, now it is considered chic and often professional to dress in all black.

Chanel was introduced to the Duke of Westminster, Hugh Richmond Arthur Grosvenor and started a ten year affair, which brought her to London, England.
It is rumored that the interlocking C Chanel logo was inspired by the very similar logo on the lampposts of Westminster. (The W is for Westminster and the CC is for City Council)

Chanel westminster post

Some coincidence, right? Who knows

There are a few rumors as to how Chanel got her “Coco” nickname, it is believed that it was taken from one of the songs she would sing back in her cabaret days as a young girl ‘Qui qu’a vu Coco!’

There is another rumor…. that ‘Coco’ threw the most outstanding cocaine parties in the whole of Paris!!
Chanel was a drug user, she injected herself with Morphine daily for about 35 years leading up to her death in 1971 in the Hotel Ritz in Paris.

So what has Desdemona got for you……. Well these are definitely sporty-chic

Everyone’s going wild for leopard print …..

…………This is the coat that really started it! Worn by Jackie Onassis in 1962 designed by Oleg Cassini, before this, leopard print (real leopard fur (YUK!)) was worn by women as fashion in the decadent days of the 1920s through to the 1950s, usually by actresses and the very wealthy, but it was Jackie O in this coat that made mainstream women in the 60s hunt down their own copies of this coat, usually in faux fur.

Leopard Print is timeless and never really goes out of style & it demands attention
you can still pack a punch with leopard accessories if you don’t want to go full on with a coat, however I think you’ll be surprised how many outfits this will compliment, either the stylish smart Parisian look or go for the rock chic edgy look like Kate Moss

…….even I’m at it! I do LOVE a bit of leopard print

Happy 55th Birthday Carnaby Street

Firstly I’m gonna start by wishing a Happy 55th Birthday to The Carnaby Street we know today
Carnaby Street has a huge reputation for such a tiny street, just a cut through street from Regents Street to Soho.
Before 1960 it was not notorious at all, with just a few warehouses & tailor supplies for the nearby Saville Row.

Being just a 3 min walk from Soho, the street firstly became popular with the gay community, then when the Mods came across it, it became known, and the place to shop.

Major music artists managers all had their offices on or around the street in the 60s….

Brian Epstein on Argyll Street, Robert Wace on Kingly Street, Andrew Loog Oldham on Maddox Street, Don Arden on Carnaby Street,

so bands such The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Small Faces, The Kinks & The Who would get their suits on Carnaby Street because they liked the modern cut, bringing together music, fashion & art & putting Swinging London firmly on the map!

other people to shop on Carnaby Street were Twiggy, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix & an unknown face Mark Feld later to become Marc Bolan.

“The high street for the stars” – Robert Orbach from Lord Kitcheners Valet

New independent fashion boutiques were popping up one by one Lady Jane, Take 6, Male West 1, Lord John, Kleptomania, Gear, Lord Kitcheners Valet, Foale & Tuffin to name but a few

I couldn’t end this piece without mentioning the “King of Carnaby Street” Mr. John Stephen. John Stephen was the first to open a boutique on Carnaby Street in 1957, after a fire in his premises in Beak Street.
John’s boutique His Clothes grew popular for their coloured jeans and Breton shirts & John Stephen was the first person to import Levi Jeans to the UK
Carnaby street peaked in 1967 and has never quite been the same again

Today the shops that line Carnaby Street are Liam Gallaghers Pretty Green, Lambretta Clothing, Irregular Choice, The Kooples..
I’ve done a little bit of Cyber Shopping for you here and have picked an outfit that can all be found on Carnaby Street today

(In my opinion, nowhere near as fun as some of the clothing being sold or worn on Carnaby Street in the 60s, but as Bob Dylan once sang…. the times are a changin)

Iced Coffee on Carnaby Street

Supertrash swift skirt £90. Cheap Monday Glam perspex sunglasses £25. Dr. Martens Aila shoes £125. Skinnydip bee clutch bag £45. Peckham Rye Boulevard Golden silk scarf £65. Classic plain white Pepe Jeans linen shirt £65

Trend Alert: “Don’t Pull The Short Straw” you do not want to miss out on this Summer trend: Straw hand bags

Straw hand bags are often made of plaited raffia, cane,
dried grass or rushes.
In the mid 1950s straw hand bags appeared on the arms of all the fashion movie elite, in the south of France such as Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor & Jane Birkin.

Elizabeth Arden went on to create a high-fashion take on a shrimp basket in 1956, outfitted with a compass!!
By 1958 woven basket bags were staples of high fashion magazines, and still as stylish today as they were then,
With designers such as Kate Spade, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Lulu Guinness & Bottega Veneta designing their take on this classic bag

Here’s how some of you fashionistas rock yours….

The Secret to Wearing High Heels Without Pain

So this a repost from Fashion Stylist Leslie Christen I will definitely be trying this out…
If you’ve ever hobbled home after a long day or night in heels, this is the tip for you!
Tape your third and forth toes (counting from the big toe) together – We recommend nude medical tape for a low-profile look, but Scotch tape works in a pinch- to alleviate pain in the ball of your foot.
Sound crazy?
Here’s the reasoning:
There’s a nerve that splits between those two toes, which causes pain when pressure is put upon it, (a.k.a. when you wear heels). The tape removes the strain on the nerve, allowing you to dance the night away.
You’re Welcome!
Let me know if any of you try this out and if it works for you, or have you already tried this? what do you think?
